The duration of unemployment is still relatively high, with an average of about six to seven months.
A quick visit to the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that you are not alone in your job search, which is comforting and disheartening all at once. However, just because that is the average length of unemployment does not mean you are subjected to the same fate.
If you have not been getting any feedback from the resumes and cover letters you have sent out, consider revamping your resume and how you approach the cover letter. You may even want to contact a professional resume writer or career coach.
If you have not been getting any call backs from your interviews, perhaps your job search is stuck due to interpersonal skills. Or it may be as simple as rephrasing some of your answers. Again, ask for help where you are struggling.
Sometimes, taking a break and changing your tactics can help dramatically. Maybe even consider changing the type of jobs you are applying for, the location you are searching in or even your attitude can help.
However, if you have been trying your hardest to no avail, sometimes it really does come down to luck.
“The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work,” said Harry Golden.
Just as Thomas Edison said, “There is no substitute for hard work.”
