Dress To Impress: Tips for Picking Clothes for an Interview

What to wear to an interview: There are so many options!

What’s that? Your application got the OK and you’ve been called in for an interview? Congrats! You’ve accomplished the big first step in getting hired. This is your chance to show this potential employer who you are beyond your resume. You are ready: You have the knowledge, personality, and skills, but what about the missing piece that ties it all together? What are you wearing?

While a good fashion sense might not be a crucial skill for the job of your dreams, the right outfit is an essential tool for a successful interview. What you wear to an interview tells a potential employer how seriously you take the interview and contributes to the overall image you’d like to convey. Here are six tips to keep in mind when dressing for the big day:

Dress for the job

Do a little sleuthing. What do people typically wear at this company? Know the difference between business, business casual, and casual dress codes. For more casual workplaces, it doesn’t hurt to dress a little nicer to show respect for the interview.

Say it, don’t spray it

You might have a “signature scent,” but how embarrassing would it be if your interviewer couldn’t stop sneezing? Keep perfume and cologne very light or don’t wear any at all.

Make sure it fits

It doesn’t matter how expensive or fashionable your clothes are if they don’t fit. Wearing tight or loose clothes can make you look sloppy, disorganized, and ill-prepared.

Accessorize with caution

Jewelry is a marvelous way to tie a look together, but don’t go crazy. A wristwatch can give you a professional look. However, a big sparkly necklace or ring may be distracting.

Comfort is key

You might have the perfect power suit ready to go, but if the shirt is itchy or the shoes pinch, you will look uncomfortable. Make sure that everything is relatively comfortable so that you can walk confidently and sit without fidgeting.

Invest

Having one great interview outfit is an investment in your future. You don’t need designer labels in your wardrobe; just find pieces that are well made and more timeless than trendy.

Keep these tips in mind when dressing for that next big interview. What tips would you add to this list?
