Millennials are Changing the Rules of the Promotions Game

by Claudia Hualde on January 28, 2011

In a recent LinkedIn blog post by Monica Rogati, “Level Up! How Millennials are Changing the Promotion Game,” we felt inspired to talk about these changes from a Millennial’s point of view.

There were about 80 million born between 1980 and 2000, and they have been coming–and will continue to come–into the workforce. Millennials are changing the way the workplace functions.

Like in this case, Rogati points out that Millennials are even changing the way promotions are distributed. In previous years, it seemed that January was the time to ask for that promotion. However, with the invasion of the Millennials, promotions can happen just about any time.

Rogati mentions that it could be because Millennials are not afraid to ask. And, the consensus seems to be, they only take “yes” for an answer.

But what is the big fuss about? I am sure that when the baby boomers came into the workplace, they too changed the way the it functions. With every generation there will be new changes. But it is up to you to either embrace those changes and learn, or reject them and stay behind.

Millennials are not only beginning to fill the empty cubicles in your office, but also they are your consumers, audience, and critics. Thus, you should appreciate Millennials because they think the way your consumers think. And they are up-to-speed with technology.

Millennials–or if you prefer, Gen Y–are known for wanting more. They want the benefits you gained in 20 years right away. But, I want to ask you, what is wrong with striving for more? Yes, they may come off as cocky and maybe they could slow down just a bit. But with a little patience from both Millennials and baby boomers, this topic can be put to rest.

Should Millennials earn their spot? Or should they strive for what they want?
