4 Tips for Interview Travel Without the Hassle

by Megan McMonagle on February 11, 2011

If you’re applying for a position in a city other than your own, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll have to travel for an interview at least once. Don’t let this deter you because it could be the next step to a new career. Here are some tips to help you prepare when going for the interview:

1. Confirm all travel plans. In most cases, the employer will arrange a flight and hotel for you, but make sure to double-check that everything is in order. You don’t want to miss your flight or end up at the wrong hotel because you didn’t confirm everything. Before you travel, you should also think about how you’re going to get to and from the airport. If you haven’t been to the city you’re visiting before, do some research beforehand to make sure you know exactly how you’ll get around.

2. This isn’t a vacation. Although you may want to explore the sites and enjoy the city, don’t let your curiosity ruin your interview. Focus solely on the interview and making sure you’re fully prepared. If you get the job, you’ll be able to come back and experience the city for real!

3. Don’t forget about the interview. This may seem like a no-brainer, but don’t forget that you have to prepare for this interview just like every other one. The stress of traveling shouldn’t interfere with your preparedness for the interview. Do all of your research before you travel so you’re not scrambling in the hotel room the night before.

4. Make arrangements at home. If traveling for an interview will interfere with work or school, make sure to make the necessary arrangements at home. For college seniors — don’t be afraid to miss class! You can always make up one class, but you may not have another chance to interview. Your professor should understand that seniors focus more on their job search in the last semester.

What other ways have you prepared to travel for an interview?
