Future Looking Brighter for College Graduates

by Megan McMonagle on March 31, 2011

The past two and a half years have been rough on college graduates, with hiring percentages down significantly. However, this year’s graduating class can look forward to more opportunities coming their way.

According to a survey done recently by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), more bachelor’s degree graduates are expected to be hired this year than last year, with an increase in starting salaries, as well. In NACE’s 2011 Job Outlook Survey, they found that employers plan to hire 13.5% more recent graduates this year than last year. They also described the job market as “good”, compared to the “fair” report given last year.

CNN Money has also reported that the average starting salary for recent graduates will increase for the first time since 2008. Graduates can expect a salary increase of 3.5% compared to last year, with an average salary of $50,034 annually.

This is great news for college seniors graduating this May! The recession has taken a huge toll on the job market for recent grads and things appear to be turning around. With that said, college seniors should continue with their preparation and ongoing job searches. Many employers are seeking out graduates in particular and have created training programs to transition grads into the full-time workforce. Looking for programs like these can be a good way to ease into your career and gain the necessary skills for your industry.

Employers are also more open now about hiring from all types of majors. Because of this, don’t let your undergraduate degree deter you from applying to a job outside of your field of study. Employers like to see a liberal arts background. We all know that most people don’t stay in the same field as their undergraduate major, so employers are more willing to give you on-the-job training.
