Preparing for the Unknown Post-Grad

by Megan McMonagle on March 11, 2011

While most college seniors are currently enjoying themselves on spring break, the reality of their imminent graduation will hit them hard in the coming weeks. The concept of graduating college and entering the real world can be daunting. Here are a few bits of advice from a fellow college senior thinking about the ever-approaching graduation date in May.

Enjoy your time now! We only have two more months of college that we can never get back. As always, stay focused on your studies and maintain a steady job search, but also don’t forget to enjoy your last time in college! These four years are a once in a lifetime experience. Think about what you haven’t done at your school in the past four years that you always wanted to and go out and do it! Take advantage of this opportunity–college is a unique time in your life that you can’t get back.

Stay open minded about post grad! Don’t limit yourself too much when you think of your plans for life after graduation. You never know what opportunity may come your way. Also, don’t get too down if you haven’t secured a job by graduation day. Everyone starts their careers in different ways. Keep yourself out there, but don’t get discouraged.

Don’t be afraid! This is an exciting time in your life — it’s your time to decide the next step. For the past 16 years, your education has dominated your time. You always knew that academics were your main priority. But now, anything is possible! Think about what you truly want to do and don’t be afraid of it. If starting a career the day after graduation isn’t your ideal situation and you can afford to, make other plans for your time directly after graduation.

College seniors, now is a momentous time in your life. So enjoy it now and don’t be afraid if you’re life takes you in unexpected directions!

How are you spending your last few months in college?
