Writing can get you hired. No, really, it can. No matter the industry you’ve chosen, writing can give you that edge against the competition. Writing allows you to express your experience, your skills, and yourself to employers beyond a photo and a resume.
Check out these four ways (ranked from most profound to least) to write yourself into your next job:
Freelance Writing
This is a legitimate job on its own. Literally hundreds of publishers, newspapers, magazines, and blogs are paying people to write about what they know best. Writer’s Market is a wonderful resource (available online and as a book) telling any freelancer who’s who and how to pitch different publications. Your industry is represented (trust me) and you can get up to a dollar per word. Cha-ching!
Blogging
Another great way to reach a massive audience and show off your qualifications in your industry is blogging. Don’t know what to write about? Make observations about your day-to-day work life, review new products, analyze relevant current events. Blogs are simple to start up and maintain; WordPress, Blogger, and Tumblr make it exceptionally easy. Use Google Analytics and you’ll be able to track visitor and linking statistics.

Online Communities
Need less of a commitment? Join an online community that has discussions! Get a conversation going with potential employers and industry peers. Check out LinkedIn Groups, where you can jump into a discussion with like-minded professionals or join a community that is more specific to your career.
Twitter is easy, quick, and doesn’t take a whole lot of thought (just keep it under 140 characters). Connect with classmates, co-workers and other peers while getting a whole lot closer to dream companies and future employers. Make a point to tweet about career-relevant topics and you might even be retweeted by your next boss!
