Inside Your Dream Company: VaynerMedia

by Cory Williams on May 4, 2011

Are you looking for a job that is all about community? Look no further than VaynerMedia. Founded by Gary Vaynerchuk and his brother in May 2009, VaynerMedia is a boutique agency that focuses on social media strategies, community management, and emerging technology.

VaynerMedia works with companies like PepsiCo, the New York Jets, and other clients to build a social space to speak to their customers. More than that, VaynerMedia seeks to build a community using the ideal voice for their clients on platforms like Twitter and Facebook.

Sarah Mandato, Vice President of Community, spoke with me about the unique company and how job seekers can find a place at VaynerMedia.

Every employee at VaynerMedia comes from a unique background. Mandato has been with VaynerMedia for three months now, but prior to joining the company, she was a lawyer. She caught the “social media bug,” was introduced to Gary, and the rest is history. Since everyone comes from very diverse backgrounds at VaynerMedia, the company culture is truly engaging, according to Mandato.

One of the few prequisites for entry-level employees is having a passion for social media and building communities online. There is no rigidity in terms of a hiring process at VaynerMedia, since it is a relatively small start-up company—they staff based on need. Unlike other companies however, VaynerMedia will always stay in contact with candidates—even if they can’t be hired right away. VaynerMedia strives to bring on the best candidates, from employee referrals to online applications.

As for recruiting, Mandato said, “Everyone at VaynerMedia has an eye on social media to see who is out there making an impression.” Also, due to the fan following that founder Gary Vaynerchuk has created there is great momentum for his fan base to reach out to VaynerMedia. Above all, it is important to have the energy and passion for social media.

Mandato said one of the exciting aspects of being a start-up company is the room for growth at VaynerMedia. “The sky’s the limit,” she said. Another special aspect of the company is that they are always in contact with their clients; it is an ongoing relationship to build the best community for that brand or client.

Mandato expressed the importance for entry-level candidates to stand out in the pack—differentiate yourself. She said the best way to so do is to show your personality and character. Mandato says when candidates stand out, a week later she will remember them and think about how she wants them around the office—contributing to the company culture.

Come prepared to any interviews with VaynerMedia—know the basics of the company and have manners. Don’t try to be what you’re told is “the best” candidate—be yourself, demonstrate your strengths.

If you’ve caught the “social media bug” like Mandato, and strive to interact with your online community, take your passion to VaynerMedia.
