5 Characteristics of a Great Mentor from Mr. Feeny

by Elizabeth Short on July 25, 2011

A mentor is important to have during college, your career, and in life. There are many great mentors in the world, but I believe that the best one is Mr. Feeny!

While watching reruns of Boy Meets World. I have found some characteristics of Mr. Feeny that every mentor should possess.

1. RELATIONSHIP. A mentor will form a relationship with his/her mentee. Corey, Shawn, and Topanga saw Mr. Feeny not only as a mentor but also as a friend.

2. COMMITTED. A mentor is committed to the success of his/her mentee. He/She doesn’t want to see their mentee fail or give up. Mr. Feeny constantly saw Corey and Shawn make mistakes, but always guided them back to the right path every time.

3. PUSHES. A mentor should push his/her mentee to learn more and succeed in college, career, or life. Corey, Shawn, and Topanga grew up with Mr. Feeny always pushing them to do their best. He made sure they succeeded in every part of their life.

4. GUIDES. A mentor should offer guidance to his/her mentee. From the other side of the little fence Mr. Feeny would provide Corey, Shawn, and Topanga guidance in everything, from life lessons, school, and relationships. He seemed to have an answer for everything!

5. COMMUNICATES. A mentor needs to be a good communicator. He/She should be able to tell his/her mentee when they have failed and communicate how they can get over the failure. Mr. Feeny was never afraid to call out Corey, Shawn, or Topanaga when they did something wrong. He knew that they looked to him for everything and trusted him when he told them they were wrong.

Whether you are just entering college, in the middle of college or starting your first job, keep in mind the above five characteristics and you are sure to have a great mentor.

What are other characteristics of a good mentor?
