It’s pretty much common knowledge that job seekers should use their network during their search. But the act of networking should not only be contained to when you are job searching, or need anything for that matter. Instead, consider networking as a way of life.
I’ve heard the advice of living a networking lifestyle before, but I never really understood how to do it without being that pushy, sometimes sleazy business person whom many people dislike. That was until I started reading Keith Ferrazzi’s book Never Eat Alone. This book, and the man who wrote it, is nothing short of amazing and I highly suggest any job seeker or professional to read it. His book is full of stories and tips on how to incorporate networking into your daily life in order to become a natural connector. Here are a few of them:
Never eat alone. Just as the title suggests, mealtimes are a good time to network. Whether in the office break room during lunch or at a social event, food is a common equalizer. So use mealtimes as a time to establish a relationship with someone.
Don’t keep score. Don’t solely focus on what someone in your network can do, or has done, for you.
Provide content. Being a person of content will help make you more valuable in other people’s networks.
Ping all the time. Pinging is the act of constantly checking in with people in your network to keep in touch. It’s important to maintain relationships all the time, not just when you need something.
Do you live a networking lifestyle? If so, how?
