by Teresa Humbert on September 7, 2011

There are many tips and tricks out there to help job seekers receive an interview. Everyone is looking for the best ways to find a job, especially because of the current economy. Rayanne Thorn from Blogging4Jobs writes about 6 Tips to Increase Your Chances of Getting an Interview and 6 MORE Atypical Tips for Securing An Interview. Here is the summary of both articles combined.

  1. Intelligence, energy and integrity. Include these three buzzwords somewhere on your resume. Many employers look for all these characteristics in a potential employee.
  2. Letter of recommendation. Attach a recommendation to your cover letter from a previous professor, colleague or manager. Do this in order to demonstrate that you possess the three qualities from above.
  3. Prove your intelligence. You want the employer to believe that you have done your research on the company and industry. This shows enthusiasm, which all interviewers like to see.
  4. Review your resume. Have a friend or a recruiter look over your resume and give you the feedback that you need. You want someone who is going to give you constructive criticism, and not sugar coat it.
  5. Make your resume stand out. A recruiter will know within a matter of seconds if a candidate is going to be a good fit for the job. This might mean including a well-written summary statement.
  6. Avoid buzzwords. There are certain words that will put your resume in the garbage can. Some might be: expert, thought leader, guru, team-player, good communication skills. Check out 5 Phrases to Keep Off Your LinkedIn Profile for more ideas.
  7. Do anything necessary. That is, when it comes to getting an interview time slot. This means re-arrange your schedule so that you can get in as soon as possible. This automatically shows interest in the position.
  8. Ask questions. The last thing that you want to do is be silent at the end of the interview. Show your enthusiasm, and come prepared.
  9. Go through the recruiter. If you are applying to a company where they have a recruiter, hiring manager or human resources department, you should send your resume and cover letter to them. Don’t go around them and send your information directly to the CEO because it will burn bridges.
  10. Create a positive personal brand. Most employers will Google you before they even set up an interview. You don’t want them to see you swearing on Twitter or tagged in inappropriate pictures on Facebook. Check out How to Be a Positive Influence on Twitter for more tips.
  11. Get a referral. This is only if it is possible, and you know a current employee within the company. Knowing someone is most likely always a step in the right direction.
  12. Be ethical. You should always act the way that you think that you should act. This means, going about your job search in a positive and professional manner. You should want to hire yourself, and if you don’t believe that then no one else will either.

These are some great tips for job seekers, and hopefully these tips will lead you in the right direction. Search on job seekers!
