I’m sure that every person has felt like they’re struggling at one point in their lives. I tend to feel like that a lot, because I like to take on a million projects at once. There are many different ways to go about dealing with these emotions, but the most important thing is to never give up.
Alison Green from U.S. News writes an article about What to Do When You’re Struggling at Work. She talks about five different things that are important to remaining calm, and taking a step in the right direction. Here is what she says:
1. Acknowledge the situation. You can’t sit there and just ignore the problem, because that is only going to make it worse. Plus, it may also appear that you don’t care about the situation to others around you, and you don’t want to give that impression.
2. Attack the problem. You can’t just wish and hope that situation is going to resolve itself, you need to actually do something about. Make a meeting with your supervisor, and let him or her know that you are feeling overwhelmed and know that you could be performing better. Then ask for his or her advice, and actually listen to it!
3. Thank your supervisor. This may seem so simple, but it is definitely something that will make you look better. Even if you don’t agree with what they had to say, you want them to understand that you respect their time.
4. Evaluate the criticism. Think about what your boss said, and then give yourself some feedback. It doesn’t matter if what you believe is opposite from their opinion. You just need to be honest with yourself about the situation, and giving yourself constructive criticism will help.
5. Make a decision. Now that you understand what your boss is saying, and what you believe you should change it is time to act on these things. Maybe your work habits need to change, or maybe you need to tackle the assignments in a different manner. Either way, something needs to be done.
