Gen Y has cultivated a reputation for being adaptable, driven, and optimistic despite the negative unemployment outlook. Gen Y’ers are aware of and practice the usual techniques to stay afloat the job market that are aligned with their social and tech-savvy-ness: online presence and management, optimized resume/portfolio, and professional networking.
An article by Frank Gullo of Superior Group reveals common tips for being a viable candidate during the recession. He also offers some alternative tips that Gen Y may not have considered, and yet, would make them stand out as well-rounded professionals. Consider these three tips below:
Read. Whether it’s a blog post, magazine article, or book, reading will not only improve your vocabulary and comprehension, it can also offer new insights and viewpoints. Consider reading materials that align with your industry and career goals as it can show your interest and expertise to a potential employer.
Volunteer. If you are unemployed, spending your time volunteering can keep your networking and professional skills sharp. Gullo also points out that in volunteering, “…you’ll likely gain new perspective and grow skills you didn’t even know you had.” When choosing your activity or organization to spend your time, be sure to choose something you are passionate and enthusiastic about.
Be Kind to Co-Workers. Help your co-workers when you can in your workplace. You can learn new skills when helping out on a different task and make the working environment a more cooperative and productive place. Making this a habit now will follow you throughout your career and be noticed by your employer and co-workers.
