Some job seekers have a set idea of where they’d like to work — some have no clue. It seems, the Wall Street Journal reports, that in general, young workers have a pretty good idea of their dream company — Google.
A survey by Universum, an employment data and consulting firm, show that about one in five young workers picked Google as the place they’d most like to work (for more great companies, see Top Companies For Career Opportunities).
Here is the full list of the top 10 companies young workers chose and the corresponding percentage of workers who chose them:
- Google (19.67%)
- Apple (12.74%)
- Facebook (8.9%)
- U.S. Department of State (7.89%)
- Walt Disney Company (7.67%)
- Amazon (6.63%)
- Federal Bureau of Investigation — FBI (6.59%)
- Microsoft (5.76%)
- Sony (5.14%)
- Central Intelligence Agency — CIA (5.04%)
The statistics show that Google won by a landslide — but that Apple and Facebook are top contenders, too. Universum conducted the same survey a year before, which also resulted in Google as number one. Why is Google such a strong candidate for top place to work?
Google has “established a very strong brand in what its culture is, in what it’s like to work there,” says Chris Cordery, Universum’s director of Americas.
The study also found that 61% of young professionals are hoping to leave their jobs within the next two years; and, 40% of respondents also said that job stability is very important among potential employers.
Today’s young professionals seem to be looking for flexibility, stability and creativity in workplace culture. Just like it’s important for job seekers to build a strong brand to attract employers, it’s important that companies go beyond their consumer brand and establish a workplace brand to attract talent.
