Job Seekers: 3 Ways To Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile

by Katie Lewis on November 2, 2011

Job seekers have many choices where to direct their job search online. From Twitter to Facebook, and Google+ to LinkedIn, job seekers can focus one or all four networks to manage their personal brand and get noticed by hiring managers and recruiters. Though each one has it’s pros and cons, LinkedIn remains the number one most used social network for recruiting talent – so utilizing your profile to it’s highest potential is essential.

An article by Lewis Howes on Copyblogger reveals seven key ways to utilize a LinkedIn profile from a business and marketing perspective. However, a few of these tips can transcend from marketing clients and products to marketing yourself. Consider these three ways below to optimize your LinkedIn profile:

SEO Your Profile. Not only can you re-arrange and customize your profile, you can also improve your visibility on search engines. Using Google Analytics, research high-ranking keywords that you want to associate with your personal brand and career interests.

Run A Spell Check. No one is perfect, but if you list on your profile summary that you are “detail-oriented” and yet have several typos – it can be viewed as unprofessional. Take time to check and double check the spelling in your profile. If in doubt, get a second pair of eyes of a friend or family member to help.

Have a Call To Action. Include something dynamic that will lead the recruiter to contact you. Leave a link to your online portfolio/social profile that lists your contact information and more importantly, what skills and expertise you can provide.

These tips can help your profile stand above the rest of the 100 million users, but don’t forget the basics of using the social network aspect LinkedIn in your job search.
