Follow Growing Industries, It Could Lead to a New Career

by Dana Schwartz on January 4, 2012

Entering the job market or starting a new career can be a frightening task, especially in today’s economy. Now might be the best time to look where the market is moving and where there could be a hidden abundance of job opportunities.

In a recent Fortune.com article, contributor Anne Fisher laid out which fields seem to be picking up for 2012.

Here are her top five:

1. Information technology. Research has found that the fastest-growing category of keywords were in IT. Also, hiring managers said they will expand their IT staff significantly in the coming years.

2. Health care professionals. As the population of the U.S. continues to age, so does the importance of healthcare. Right now, there is a shortage of nurses and other trained medical professionals.

3. Health care management and support staff. There is more to healthcare than trained medical professionals! Healthcare businesses need executives to run them. And there are more healthcare companies out there than you might think.

4. Engineers. Studies say that employers are having difficulty finding engineers to hire. Need to pick a major? Look into engineering.

5. Industrial skills. Surprisingly, U.S. manufacturing is growing. Also, there is a shortage of qualified candidates to replace older skilled workers.

I’m not saying you need to be a hedge fund manager or a nurse to succeed. But if these industries are growing, so are jobs surrounding them. Do you like healthcare but you’re not exactly the medical type? The council of PR firms recently listed healthcare as one of public relations biggest growth areas. My point is: there are ways to indirectly find a new career path from these growing industries.

Do your research. There are ways to do what you are passionate about in a field that has potential.

Do you know of any growing fields you’d like to add to the list?
