A “Monster” Guide To Online Networking

by Kate D'Amico on February 2, 2012

As savvy job seekers, you know the importance of online networking — social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn are essential to connecting with people and building your professional brand. Monster.com, an online job board and career advice resource, created a new e-book to support job seekers in building their online network.

Monster’s Guide to Online Networking is a compilation of the site’s best networking advice plus new tips. The best part? It’s FREE!

The e-book walks you through everything from the basics of social networking to creating your personal brand, building a mutually beneficial relationship, and what not to do while networking. Plus, it offers a step-by-step guide to Tweeting and outlines how to turn a stranger into a contact — a fundamental part of networking.

Some of my favorite parts of the book:

1. “Networking Tips for Shy People”

Any shy person knows how hard it is to put yourself out there and connect with someone; it’s intimidating! This book offers three tips to help shy people network — set multiple networking goals, volunteer at large events, and start online. See page 14 for more in-depth tips.

2. “5 Career Experts on Twitter”

This book offers a good launching pad for those starting to use Twitter professionally by naming some great career experts to follow. Who’s number one on the list? Come Recommended’s very own founder and president Heather Huhman (@heatherhuhman). Right on target, Monster.

3. “Networking Don’ts: 9 More Mistakes You Can’t Afford to Make”

It seems that online networking has just as many “don’ts” as it has “do’s.” This section, starting on page 22, has a good amount of quality advice on what to avoid when it comes to online networking. Job seekers, pay attention!

Whether you’re actively seeking employment or happy in your job, networking is always a must — check out Monster’s Guide to Online Networking and start clicking!

Thank you for posting a note on this networking guide – I look forward to reading it! I have about a year left of university and one of my main goals is to network like crazy. Building relationships with people in my field will be a huge resource for the future job search, if not the most important one!
