Work the Room: Networking Event Tips

by Dana Schwartz on March 15, 2012

In a recent Forbes article, “How to Work the Room Like You Own the Place,” Nisa Chitakasem, co-author of the book 135 Networking Career Tips, shared her top tips for working a room at a networking event.

Here are my favorites:

1. Go with a purpose. Remember why you are there and what you want to get out of the event. It can be intimidating when you are standing in front of someone that could be your future boss or help you get your next job. Set a couple of targets or goals, otherwise you might find yourself wasting time and energy.

2. Use inside contacts. In my experience, the event organizer is there to facilitate conversations. Don’t be afraid to ask for an introduction or share your interests.

3. Be aware of your own body language. It’s as simple as looking like you are open to having a conversation and making connections. Make sure that you maintain eye contact and make others feel welcome. Unfold your arms and be careful with your handshake! You want to have a strong handshake but don’t be too aggressive.

4. Ask open-ended conversations. Take advantage of networking events to learn more! Asking open-ended questions will allow you to explore ideas and opinions and also show your listening skills. Open conversations can also lead to an industry conversation you can contribute to—showing that you’re a great job candidate.
