How To Improve Your Job Satisfaction

by Julie Mastrine on June 5, 2012

In this rocky job market, many employees have found themselves in less-than-desirable positions, and job satisfaction is low. But if you find you hate your job or are counting down the hours until the workday is over, you’re not alone.

About 60% of employees are dissatisfied with their jobs, according to a recent study by Accenture. Another survey by the American Psychological Association found low salaries, lack of growth opportunities, heavy workloads, and long hours are some of the most-cited reasons for job dissatisfaction.

Still, 70% of unhappy employees plan to stay at their jobs regardless. If you’re unable to switch to a more desirable position, check out these tips from CNN for feeling better about your job.

Own your growth. Identify skills you’d like to pick up, and propose projects that will help you develop them. Offer to start new projects you’ll love to work on, and stay engaged as you learn. That way, you’ll be better suited should a different position open up. Consider asking to help your company ramp up their social media efforts, or offer to plan a trip for your department to gain insight and creative ideas.

Use your freedom. Accenture’s survey found 64% of employees won’ leave their jobs because they like the flexibility they’re afforded. Ask your boss how they feel about flex time, like telecommuting or other opportunities to work from home. Having more control over your daily schedule could help you to regain your spark.

Volunteer. Take a few hours a week to volunteer to do something you love, whether it be working with animals, raising money for a humanitarian cause, or otherwise giving back to your community. Taking a bit of time to do something that truly makes you happy will spill over into your 9-to-5.

Small changes can help you to feel more motivated about work, even if you’re not a huge fan of your current job. You can check out more of CNN’s tips here.
