How To Maintain Your Sanity During Your Job Search

It’s normal for job seekers to feel overwhelmed by what can seem like an endless pile of resumes to tailor, networking events to attend, and interviews to ace. Feeling stressed about your job search is normal, but there are a few ways to maintain your sanity during the difficult process.

A post on ForbesWoman recently highlighted a few habits of highly effective job seekers. Overall, it’s imperative to stay positive and grounded during your job hunt to ensure your mental well-being and avoid burnout. Check out a few ways to do this below:

Stay focused on the future. It can be easy to get caught up in thoughts of what could have been–if only you’d followed up with that networking contact, or sent your resume to that recruiter, or hadn’t blown that interview question–but these thoughts are destructive. Instead of focusing on past mistakes, stay zeroed in on your goals. If you find this difficult, try breaking down your job search into smaller goals, like,  ”Contact ten hiring managers by Friday,” or, “Attend three networking events each month.” This can help you to keep things in perspective and force out negative thoughts.

Don’t let your joblessness define you. Those who derive all their self-worth from their careers are on a slippery slope to disappointment. Your job doesn’t define you or make you who you are–yes, it’s an important part of who you are, but it’s only a small piece of the pie. Your joblessness may be an unfortunate circumstance, nothing more. Look at it as an opportunity for growth and personal development, not self-punishment.

Surround yourself with positive people. Emotions are contagious, so stay away from those who only serve to bring you down. Don’t waste time with those who insist on creating a pity party for you–you’ll only lose motivation if you do. Read inspiring novels, watch comedic movies, and let your friends and family know that while you didn’t choose your situation, you’re going to be positive about it regardless.

The crux of maintaining your happiness during a job search lies mostly in your perspective on the matter. Check out more ways to keep sane during your job hunt here.
