Career On The Rocks? 4 Warning Signs To Watch Out For

by Megan Westemeier on July 24, 2012

The unemployed can’t seem to catch a break. Many of the lucky ones who are employed live in constant fear that their job will be the next to go. In today’s workforce, almost nobody’s career is safe from the destructive economy.

So what’s an employee to do in tough times like these? Picking up on the warning signs that your career may be on the rocks is one way to better prepare for (or hopefully avoid) being the next victim of the unemployment crisis. Steve Tobak recently wrote an article for CBS News, “8 Signs Your Career Is In Trouble“. Check out these four warning signs to look out for.

1. Nobody has anything stellar to say about you. You may be doing an OK job, but if no one is jumping up and down over the quality of your work it’s that much easier to justify getting rid of you. Give your work 110 percent help ensure others view you as indispensable.

2. Top employees are mysteriously moving on. When a lot of good employees begin leaving the company around the same time, there is certainly cause for alarm. They’ve likely been clued in that the company is already in trouble or they foresee trouble in the future and are leaving before the situation worsens.

3. You’re overlooked for raises and promotions despite positive feedback from your boss. This could mean one of two things, your boss is afraid of telling you the truth or you’re being underestimated. Either way, speak to your boss about what the deal is (nicely). If things don’t seem to improve, you are likely seen as only being capable of preforming one job, and should probably start dusting off your resume and looking for a new company.

4. No company growth. Without growth, your company is really going nowhere. Not to mention, there is little room for advancing your career with a company that is not growing. If this is the case, it may be time to start looking for work elsewhere.
