With fall quickly approaching, many companies are gearing up for fall recruiting season. Often, hiring managers delay bringing on any new employee during the summer as the office is typically in flux with current employees distracted by summer plans and coming and going from vacations. If you are lucky enough to have recently landed a new job, here are a few tips for making your first day of work a successful one:
1. Get plenty of sleep. Your first day of wo
rk at a new job is most likely going to be chaotic and overwhelming. You don’t want to find yourself losing steam halfway through the work day. Be sure you get a good night’s sleep before your first day so you are refreshed and alert as you are bombarded with all sorts of important information.
2. Be on time. Being late on your first day of work will certainly not leave a good impression. If you are anything like me, choosing what to wear is the most time consuming part of getting ready, especially when starting a new job and trying to make a good impression! Have your outfit ready to go the night before so there aren’t any delays in that area. Also, be aware of how long it will take you to arrive at your new job with rush hour traffic accounted for.
3. Ask questions. As mentioned, your first day of work is certain to be overwhelming and full of new information. If you’re unsure of what someone is talking about, don’t just smile and nod your head cluelessly hoping you’ll eventually figure it out, ask! As a new employee, your co-workers will expect you to have lots of questions.
4. Be friendly. Being friendly is always a good idea, but especially when you are a new employee starting a new job. You definitely don’t want to begin your first day of work at a new job giving your co-workers any reason to dislike you. Smile and be polite to everyone you meet.
5. Observe the company culture. As a new employee, it’s important to spend time observing different aspects of the office on your first day of work at your new job. Take note of how people interact with one another, how they work, what the dress code is like, etc. When starting a new job, fitting in with the company culture is essential to being successful and happy in your new workplace.
