Workplace Health: Is Your Job Making You Unhealthy? [INFOGRAPHIC]

by Kristen Wishon on October 26, 2012

For most job seekers, landing a job feels like they’ve crossed the finish line. The race is over and you can finally relax, right?

Not necessarily. According to a new infographic by OnlineUniversity.net, the cost of working in today’s busy work environment is not only unhealthy, but also expensive. With many jobs involving high-stress deadlines and sedentary environments, workers today are becoming unhealthy in the workplace.

According to the infographic, from 1980 to 2000, the time spent sitting down at work increased by 8 percent. During this time, exercise rates stayed the same and the obesity rate doubled.

Check out some other interesting work-related health issues we all might encounter:

  • Two-thirds of Americans use a computer at work. Of these Americans, 75 percent suffer from eye and vision problems. Ouch!
  • People with sedentary jobs are twice as likely to suffer from heart disease.
  • Three out of four Americans say work is stressful. This costs employers approximately $20 billion per year in stress-related expenses.

But before the stress of your job stresses you out, the infographic does highlight ways we can stay healthy amid stressful work environments and sedentary workplaces. So let’s try taking a stretch or going for a walk during our lunch break to stay active and avoid unhealthy habits.

How do you stay happy and healthy in the workplace?
