The EastWest Institute, Research Intern- Track II Diplomacy Program (Aug 2009 - Present)
Location: New York, NYAchievements: - I did the preliminary research for a Carnegie grant proposal on U.S.-Russia cooperation of opium interdiction in Afghanistan. What this entailed was researching the counter narcotics policies of each nation and surveying the international security think tank community to see if anyone was already doing work in this area. I then identified experts in the field as Carnegie wanted to know who would participate in the event if they were to accept the grant proposal. - I have sat in on EWI events involving Russian and American military personnel and diplomats, taking notes on the proceedings to produce an event report. - I have written internal memorandum on defense policy to keep EWI employees appraised of developments in the thinking of high level Pentagon personnel and Congressmen.
Responsibilities: My role is to support Senior Associate Jacqueline Miller in assembling diplomatic discussions, policy papers and project proposals on a variety of issue areas. My tasks range from doing background research on policy to identifying experts to take part in events. The areas which I have worked on include: • U.S.-Russia counter-narcotics policy in Afghanistan • U.S.-China climate change cooperation • Write internal memorandum on defense policy reviews, Quadrennial Defense Review, Ballistic Missile Defense Review, Nuclear Posture Review, and Annual Threat Assessment • Identifying U.S. legislators to participate in our Parliamentarians Network for Conflict Prevention • Tracking the progress of the START Treaty re-negotiations
The EastWest Institute, Communications Intern (Dec 2008 - Aug 2009)
Location: New York, NYAchievements: - I came to the organization without experience working in Communications. I was taught HTML and told to transfer content from the old website to a new Drupal based system. I was hired temporarily as a consultant, as to enable me to work full time. I was able to load more than five years of content and trouble shoot the new system in less than a month. - EWI was putting together the organizations Annual Report for the 2007-2008 year. I was assigned to locate a cover photo. After providing my boss with a selection of possible photos, he selected one from a source without any contact information. I was able to track down the Saudi Arabian photographer and work out a usage rate. That photo appeared on the cover of the Annual Report.
Responsibilities: My role was to support the communications objectives of The EastWest Institute, managing their online presence, organizing multimedia content and contributing to the production of commentaries and print publications. My specific responsibilities included: • Orchestrating a website re-launch by troubleshooting and transferring content to a new Drupal management system • Maintain content on new website • Creating a digital photo archive of past EWI events to facilitate easy reference for future communications needs • Researching social media trends and establishing an EWI presence on Twitter • Proofreading, copy editing and fact checking commentaries and policy publications
Fire Department of New York City- Counseling Services Unit, Administrative Assistant (Sep 2003 - Present)
Location: New York, NYAchievements: - When the Assistant to the Assistant Director of the Counseling Services Unit quit precipitously I stepped in and coordinated billing between the external service providers and the FDNY Headquarters. I maintained this responsibility for approximately 4 months until a permanent replacement could located. - After gaining experience with the CSU client database, hosted on Microsoft Access software, I was called upon to create a direction manual and train other staff members as necessary.
Responsibilities: The FDNY Counseling Services Unit provides mental health and wellness counseling for a target population of 15,000 FDNY service members and their families. My role is to provide a variety of administrative and event coordination services in furtherance of this mission. The tasks include: • Data entry and maintenance of confidential records, both physical and electronic • Track billing and payments to external clinicians providing service to our clients • Produce flyers and orchestrate mailings to inform target population of new and ongoing services • Assist during events to ensure ease of interaction between clients and providers • Answer phones and schedule appointments as needed
